Brunswick County vs. Wilmington: Which Is the Right Fit for You? by Danielle Stewart, Brunswick County REALTOR

Thinking about moving to coastal North Carolina but not sure whether Brunswick County or Wilmington is the right fit? You're not alone. It's one of the most common questions I get from families relocating to this coast, and the answer surprises most people.

More Home for Your Budget

Brunswick County consistently delivers more home for your money. Buyers often find larger lots, newer construction, and more square footage here than they would for a similar budget in Wilmington. For many families, that means room for a home office, a guest room for visiting family, or a garage big enough for the boat.

Lower Property Taxes

Property taxes in Brunswick County are lower than in neighboring New Hanover County, where Wilmington is located. Your exact bill depends on the home's value and which town or fire district it's in, so I always walk my buyers through the real numbers for each property, but the difference adds up year after year.

45 Miles of Uncrowded Coastline

Brunswick County is home to about 45 miles of some of the most beautiful and uncrowded coastline on the East Coast. Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, Caswell Beach, and Bald Head Island each have their own feel, from family friendly piers to quiet stretches where you'll share the sand with just a few neighbors.

The City Is Closer Than You Think

Here's what most people don't realize until they start looking. From Leland, downtown Wilmington is only about 20 minutes away. You get the space, the lifestyle, and the coast without giving up access to the city's restaurants, shopping, hospitals, the airport, and UNCW. The further south you go toward Shallotte and Calabash, the drive gets longer, so where you land depends on how often you plan to head into town.

When Wilmington Might Be the Better Fit

Wilmington is a great city, and for some buyers it's the right choice. If you want to walk to downtown restaurants, need a very short commute into the city every day, or prefer a more urban pace, it's worth a look. The key is knowing what matters most to you before you start touring homes.

Every Brunswick County Town Has Its Own Personality

Each of these towns has its own loyal community of residents who wouldn't trade it for anything. I live in Shallotte, and I'd be happy to tell you what each one is really like.
